Who this is for
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to sponsor a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner
- Couples applying from inside Canada who also need a work permit while they wait
- Couples who live in different countries
- Applicants whose earlier sponsorship was refused
How we help
- 1
Choose the route
Applying from inside or outside Canada changes the forms, the timeline and what the partner may do while waiting. We compare both before you decide.
- 2
Build the proof
Officers look for a genuine, ongoing relationship. We help you gather and organise photos, messages, travel, shared costs and statements from family and friends.
- 3
Prepare both sides
The sponsor and the applicant each complete their own forms. We check them against each other so dates, addresses and histories agree.
- 4
Follow it through
We answer requests for more information and prepare you for any interview.
What to bring to your first session
- Passports and status documents for both of you
- Marriage certificate or proof of living together
- Police certificates and medical exam instructions
- A relationship timeline in your own words
Common questions
Can my partner work while the application is processed?
In some cases, yes. If you are applying from inside Canada, a spousal open work permit may be possible. We check your situation first.
Does the sponsor need a minimum income?
For a spouse or partner there is usually no minimum income test, but the sponsor still has to sign an undertaking to support them. Quebec has its own rules.
What if we have been refused before?
We read the refusal reasons, tell you whether an appeal or a fresh application makes more sense, and fix the weak points in the file.
